Symantec is one of the pioneers in offering cloud services. In fact, even before the term “cloud” became popular, the types of services like cloud adoption and cloud security fell into the Managed Services catch-all. In 1995, VeriSign, now part of Symantec, was established as the world’s first Certification Authority when Managed Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), a multi-tenant cloud service was first introduced. The Symantec Managed PKI service provides trust-based security to protect federal, state or local government and large institutions against unauthorized access, compromised email, and document tampering.
“Most if not all Symantec offerings now have a cloud and on-premises option, with some being pure cloud services. The pick-up of the cloud or cloud-aware offerings has the fastest growth, driven mainly by the mega-trend of cloud-adoption and mobility,” said Nick Savvides, security evangelist at Symantec. “Businesses todays begin to realize that the multi-faceted threats to cyber security related to the cloud also require a multi-faceted response. Symantec offers the best-in-class and most comprehensive end-to-end security solutions for enterprises everywhere.”
Savvides, nonetheless, said that “being in the cloud poses a lot of risk for your organization such as data loss. Other cloud vendors have been offering Data Loss Prevention with their cloud-based email offerings but considering today’s evolving threat landscape it shows that their offerings aren’t fully up to the task of keeping an organization safe.”
This is why “Symantec is making cloud adoption easier for customers with a range of existing cloud-aware and cloud-based security solutions. To help organizations prevent data loss, Symantec’s Data Loss Prevention (DLP) is cloud aware and can extend traditional DLP to cloud services, ensuring only the right information, is in the right places and doesn’t leave the boundaries of sanction services.
“For easier and safer cloud use, customers today can adopt cloud services and utilize Symantec VIP to deliver a secure single-sign experience. With strong authentication features including biometrics and policy based access controls, Symantec enables users to enjoy better productivity while giving IT visibility and control.”
Symantec continues to seek to capitalize on enterprises moving from on-premises data storage with its first security offering for loss prevention in the cloud.
Industries where cloud adoption is noticeable include the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry segment in the Philippines, e-commerce and mobile money.
But “having said that, the adoption of cloud is not limited to these, nearly all industries from small to large can benefit from the use of cloud services. In fact many are already probably using them but either doesn’t realize this or the use is unsanctioned,” Savvides said.
