Smart Communications, Inc., the wireless arm of PLDT, has received international recognition for meeting top global standards in workplace safety, environmental care, and service quality.
The company’s Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Group was awarded three major ISO standards:
• ISO 14001 for environmental management
• ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety
• ISO 9001 for quality management
These global benchmarks confirm that Smart is following the best practices in protecting its people, its customers, and the planet.
But what does ISO mean? The International Organization for Standardization creates global guidelines to help organizations operate more responsibly and effectively. Earning ISO certification means a company has been independently assessed and proven to meet these high standards.
In Smart’s case, the certifications were awarded by BSI Philippines, the local arm of the British Standards Institution—one of the world’s most trusted organizations for auditing and certifying companies.
Leonard A. Gonzales, Vice President and Head of Property, Facilities, and Asset Resiliency Management, said the recognition is both an honor and a call to action. “In 2025, our focus is clear: to keep our people safe, especially in high-risk environments,” he said. “With rising temperatures, we face greater health and safety risks at our core sites. We’re also paying closer attention to mental health, and to the security of our teams in disaster-prone areas.”
The awarding ceremony took place at Smart’s Makati headquarters, with BSI Philippines Managing Director Ava Taniajura formally presenting the ISO distinctions. PLDT and Smart Chief Sustainability Officer Melissa V. Vergel De Dios was also in attendance.
Smart’s achievement reflects a broader commitment across the PLDT Group to run operations responsibly, safeguard employee well-being, and support long-term environmental goals.
These efforts also align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 8, which promotes safe working conditions, inclusive economic growth, and decent work for all.
By meeting international standards, Smart shows that good service must go hand in hand with protecting people and the world we live in.
