PLDT Inc. (PLDT) and its wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) bolster their commitment to support President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s digitalization mission, by expanding reliable internet access to Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs) across the Philippines. This initiative is part of the government’s flagship “BroadBand ng Masa” Program.
During a recent meeting with Marcos, the Private Sector Advisory Council’s Digital Infrastructure sector (PSAC DI) presented updates on its Connectivity Plan for GIDAs – a landmark collaboration among PLDT, Smart, and the country’s major telecommunications providers, with the support of government agencies such as the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
“PLDT is committed to driving tangible results in improving digital access to GIDAs,” said PLDT Chief Operating Officer Menardo “Butch” Jimenez Jr., who represented the company alongside PLDT Chairman, President, and CEO Manuel V Pangilinan during the PSAC meeting at Malacañang. “These efforts also align with the long-standing advocacy of Chairman MVP, who has consistently championed initiatives that empower Filipinos through education and economic development.”
PSAC Lead Convenor Sabin Aboitiz, PSAC DI Sector Head Myla Villanueva, and the aligned efforts of the country’s telcos will be pivotal in steering the Connectivity Plan, which targets activation of key GIDA sites starting this year. These expansions are set to provide residents in GIDAs with access to digital services that are vital for inclusive economic growth.
