DOST to feature emerging technologies on S&T Week

Nanotechnology and other emerging technologies that can change the way of the future will be featured in a scientific forum on July 24, 2014 as one of the events on opening day of the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) 2014 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex.

One of the topics to be discussed is the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology and its benefits and challenges. This technology is being used in the DREAM-LiDAR component of DOST’s Project NOAH (Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards) for disaster information and mitigation. Through LiDAR, accurate and detailed topographic maps of specific places are generated to help determine an area’s risk of flooding.

Also up for discussion is DOST’s Electronics Product Development Center (EPDC) – the Philippines’ first electronics design facility – and its critical role in pushing forward the local electronics industry. Once operational, EPDC will provide state-of-the-art design, prototyping and testing services for printed circuit boards or PCB.

Other topics to be tackled are nanotechnology applications in creating more efficient solar cells and the future of 3D gestures or using hand movements to control devices.

The forum on emerging technologies will start at 1pm at the Forum Hall 1 of SMX Convention Center. NSTW will run until July 28, 2014.

Organized yearly by DOST, the NSTW which carries the theme “Philippines: A Science Nation Meeting Global Challenges,” is a showcase of the latest Filipino technologies that will benefit the country. Also to be featured are interactive exhibits, audio-visual presentations, an IT-BPM career talk, robotics challenge, and awards for local inventors, among others. Admission is free.
