Globe Telecom, through its newly-formed group IT-Enabled Services Group (IG), leads the Philippines in the adoption of machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions, driving the growth of businesses and enterprises through information and communications technology (ICT).
Global IT experts forecast M2M connections to reach 116 million by 2015 across the Asia Pacific region, and over 2 billion globally by 2021.
According to Globe VP and head of IG Reynaldo Lugtu, Jr., the global economy is ready for M2M as the “next big source of productivity,” despite productivity slowdowns in the past years.
Globe IG serves the IT requirements of Philippine businesses from small and medium enterprises to large corporations, empowering them with a large platform of best-in-class infrastructure such as industry-accredited data centers, cloud solutions and managed services as well as a complete portfolio of business applications like machine-to-machine and productivity tools.
“Despite reports of a decrease in global productivity in the past years, connected devices are steadily transforming businesses and opening up new services. With huge improvements on M2M infrastructure, applications, devices, hardware and software vendors, prime movers of M2M such as Globe IG are poised to greatly contribute to productivity gains by organizations and the global economy in general,” he said.
“In the Philippines, Globe Telecom has been helping logistics and delivery firms improve their productivity and gain efficiencies by as much as 30 percent by employing M2M for tracking and monitoring delivery trucks. On the other hand, providers and end-users in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Spain also reported huge business gains among their banking, utility, logistics, and other enterprise clients,” Lugtu pointed out.
According to him, industries that can largely reap huge productivity gains from M2M include logistics and trading companies through trip optimization, improvement of service level, and increased protection against theft and pilferage by using a fleet management solution. The local manufacturing, trading, and banking sectors he said can maximize productivity through predictive maintenance and increase efficiency gains by eliminating of on-site maintenance and inspections.
The Globe IG head pointed out that M2M solutions help automate many processes resulting in cost savings, operational efficiency gains, process and productivity improvements, speedy decision-making capabilities and even additional revenue streams among companies and organizations.
Lugtu observes that the increasing awareness and knowledge of the M2M technology at work will eventually propel its adoption, “that is why it is incumbent with Globe IG as a service provider to actively promote this among industry verticals and associations that will greatly benefit from it.”
He echoed the overall viewpoint of the conference that the time is ripe for this industry-defining platform, fueled by recent developments in the form of lower costs of take-up as well as readily-available infrastructure through a surge in mobile data penetration.
