Smart and OPPO partner for 5G Standalone Trial

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has teamed up with popular smart device brand OPPO in further exploring and developing 5G Standalone (5G-SA) use cases in the Philippines.

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has teamed up with popular smart device brand OPPO in further exploring and developing 5G Standalone (5G-SA) use cases in the Philippines.

This comes after Smart’s recent firing up of their commercial 5G-SA sites in Makati. Smart and OPPO have been collaborating to test OPPO’s 5G smartphones’ compatibility on Smart’s 5G-SA network using the OPPO Find X3 Pro, as well as successfully demonstrating the potential of Voice over New Radio, or VoNR.

VoNR further elevates the voice and video call experience of users, enabling much better call quality using the 5G-SA network. Smart made its first successful VoNR call as early as July last year at the Technolab.

“By maximizing its ultra-reliable and low latency capabilities, 5G SA paves the way for new innovation and opportunities for enterprises and consumers alike,” said Mario G. Tamayo, Head of Technology at PLDT and Smart.

5G SA technology enables a variety of new industry applications that utilize 5G’s advanced features features, enabling super-fast response times and faster access to higher data rates that are required by cloud gaming, or immersive media, for example. Utilizing these advanced capabilities in Smart’s 5G network, new consumer and business services, beyond mobile phone screens, could be developed.

“OPPO is proud to partner with Smart in its pursuit of being at the forefront of the 5G evolution. We are committed to continuously provide Filipino consumers with reliable 5G enabled smartphones ranging from entry level to flagship offerings that will enable our consumers to move bigger and do more,” shared Ele Yu, OPPO Philippines Marketing Director.

To enjoy the country’s fastest, widest and most reliable 5G Network, customers can upgrade to OPPO Reno5 5G, A74 5G, the latest Reno6 Series, and Find X2 Pro, which are available with Smart Signature Plans.

With this collaboration, Smart is fortifying its leadership in the Philippine 5G space. With over 6,400 5G base stations nationwide, Smart operates the widest 5G network in the country. Ookla, the global leader in internet testing and analysis, has likewise recognized Smart as the fastest and most reliable 5G mobile network in the Philippines for Q1-Q2 2021, with median download and upload speeds that are twice faster than its closest rival.

With Mobile Number Portability, it is also now possible for subscribers to switch to Smart from other providers without having to change their number. To know more about switching to Smart, visit x.smart/switch.
