SKYbroadband, one of the Philippines’ leading home Internet broadband providers, has announced its collaboration with Cisco for its new ultra-high-speed broadband offering.

SKYbroadband’s newest customer plans — which are enabled and supported by Cisco cable broadband solutions — set a new residential Internet speed milestone in the country by providing up to 200 megabits per second in close to 300 mid- to high-end villages and subdivisions in Metro Manila.

“SKYbroadband’s new ultra-high-speed broadband plans represent a new era of broadband connectivity in the country,” said Rodrigo P. Montinola, Chief Operating Officer for Sky Cable Corp. “Our collaboration with Cisco has provided us with a more robust and scalable infrastructure, allowing us to provide increased broadband speeds to more subscribers and soon, in more areas nationwide. With its collaboration with Cisco, Sky is able to further establish cable broadband — the standard form of Internet access in many countries as the high-speed platform of choice in the Philippines.”

SKYbroadband has adopted Cisco Nexus switching technology, allowing it to increase its capacity and expand its IP network. The company has also updated its cable modem termination system (CMTS) network by shifting to Cisco uBR10000 Series Universal Broadband Routers, enabling SKYbroadband to improve network reliability and flexibility while, more importantly, increasing the Internet speed offered to its subscribers. Furthermore, SKYbroadband is using Cisco cable modems with embedded Wi-Fi that allow more Filipino family members to surf at the same time while in their homes.

According to the ITU, the United Nations specialized agency for information and communications technologies, and the Broadband Commission for Digital Development, the Philippines’ telecommunications sector played a critical role in contributing directly to the country’s economy in 2012. Telecommunication revenues account for 2.5 percent (or US$ 5.3 billion) of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), contributing some $267 million annually to economic growth.

The Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Forecast (2012–2017) notes that there will be an equivalent to 130 billion DVDs per year, 11 billion DVDs per month, or 15 million DVDs per hour of Internet traffic crossing the networks in Asia Pacific.

There will be 9 billion networked devices in Asia Pacific by 2017, up from 5 billion in 2012.

In Asia Pacific, Asia Pacific, 970 billion minutes (2 million years) of video content will cross the Internet each month in 2017. That’s 369,236 minutes of video streamed or downloaded every second.

“The economic impact of broadband connectivity is critical to transforming Philippines as we connect the unconnected, from businesses and educational institutions to government services, health care providers and homes. Having SKYbroadband connect Filipino households is the next step in our move toward a digital nation, and we are proud to be a part of this milestone, as Cisco and SkyBroadBand set the bar for residential Internet speeds,” said Stephen Misa, country general manager for Cisco in the Philippines.
