Shopee warns public against rising task and prize scams

Task scammers often impersonate representatives of notable brands such as Shopee Mall or Shopee’s HR Recruitment Team, luring victims with fake part-time or full-time job opportunities.

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, has urged the public to remain vigilant against task and prize scams, with fraudsters using increasingly deceptive tactics to target unsuspecting individuals through SMS and messaging apps.

Task and prize scams are two of the most common schemes designed to deceive individuals and lead them into huge financial losses. Task scammers often impersonate representatives of notable brands such as Shopee Mall or Shopee’s HR Recruitment Team, luring victims with fake part-time or full-time job opportunities. These fraudsters initially assign seemingly simple tasks to gain victims’ trust before demanding monetary transfers, falsely promising lucrative financial rewards in return.

Meanwhile, prize scammers would send messages containing malicious links that entice users to claim a supposed prize or reward from a company-sponsored contest. When users click these links and enter their personal details, scammers can steal sensitive information—such as names, addresses, and bank details—potentially leading to financial theft or extortion.

Shopee remains committed to ensuring a safe and secure online experience for all. Users are encouraged to exercise caution when disclosing information and making online transactions. To stay safe against scams, Shopee emphasizes the following:

  • Shopee will never ask individuals to send money in exchange for employment. All opportunities are posted only on the official Shopee Careers page.
  • Shopee does not send links via SMS or messaging platforms for prize claims. Official contest winners are announced only within the Shopee app or on Shopee’s verified pages and channels.
  • Users are advised to practice due diligence and should never share personal information such as their name, address, age, contact number, or bank details with unknown senders. Other confidential information such as personal identification number (PIN), one-time password (OTP), and account passwords should also remain strictly private.
  • Users should always keep their transactions within the Shopee app. This ensures secure payments and communication lines, order tracking, and access to Shopee’s buyer protection.

Shopee urges users to report any fraudulent activities involving its name by submitting screenshots and contact details of these scammers to the Shopee Cares Facebook Page or to Shopee’s Customer Service via the Shopee app. Learn more about how you can protect yourself from scams by visiting the Shop Safe with Shopee page or by typing “Shop Safe” in the Shopee app search bar.
