What makes hybrid cars sustainable and cost-effective

Seeing the great potential of HEV technology to reduce impact on the planet, Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank) and Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) teamed up to promote HEVs through the Say Hi to Hybrid Auto Loan promo. The offering includes FREE 1 year comprehensive insurance and lower rates.

With a record of 27.4 million tons of carbon dioxide coming from the transport sector in the Philippines in 2020, it’s about time Filipinos shift gears and start living a more sustainable lifestyle on the road. What makes a greener ride possible is the continued advancements in automotive technology that has resulted in the birth of eco-friendly cars like hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).

HEVs run on gasoline engines and electric motors that enable drivers to minimize fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Below are some HEV features showing how technology works for a greener, more sustainable ride:

Efficient power sources

HEVs have two power sources- gasoline engine and electric motor. What makes HEVs efficient is that you can switch to whichever power source is more suitable for the driving condition. Driving in fast ranges, a gasoline engine is usually at work but when starting the car, driving at constant speed in low and mid-speed ranges, and at full stop, the electric motor takes over for the engine, minimizing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

High Torque quality

Zooming in on the electric motor, this component features high torque allowing HEVs to increase speed rapidly and smoothly. They also make very little noise while running, resulting in a peaceful and satisfying ride where drivers and passengers can enjoy creating their in-car ambiance with music, podcast, radio, and even just simple conversations without the unnecessary engine sounds.

Self-charging battery

When the gasoline engine is in use, its power is maximized as it also charges the battery of the electric motor at the same time. Additionally, when the brakes are applied, an electronically controlled brake system (ECB) uses kinetic energy to recharge the electric motors’ battery. With this Regenerative Brake System, HEVs become self-charging and don’t need to be plugged in.

“Toyota is the pioneer in vehicle electrification in the country and the brand’s HEVs are known for the signature QDR- Quality, Durability, and Reliability. Globally, Toyota has been continuously developing and mastering the technology to provide people with sustainable and quality rides,” said Elvin Luciano, TMP Assistant Vice President in Marketing Division – Vehicle Sales Operations.

“We, at PSBank, understand how important it is to utilize technology to better take care of the environment. Our enhanced banking apps and online facilities are geared towards promoting paperless transactions and lessen travel time among our customers,” said PSBank Senior Vice President and Marketing Division head Emmanuel A. Tuazon. “We hope that with our latest partnership with Toyota, we are able to enjoin more Filipinos in living a more sustainable lifestyle with HEVs,” Tuazon added.
