To bring the possibilities of 5G technology closer to its customers, mobile services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) is staging a nationwide 5G experiential caravan, which will showcase the latest Smart 5G-certified smartphones, a Smart 5G-powered VR activity, and live music performances.
Launched at Molito in Alabang, Muntinlupa City on Feb 26, these “Smart 5G Experiential Zones” are set to be rolled out in Visayas and Mindanao in the coming months. They also feature special discounts, rebates, and premium treats when customers avail themselves of a Smart Signature 5G Plan.
Prepaid customers may also get exclusive freebies and as much as P2,000 discounts on a variety of Smart 5G-certified phones including Samsung, Apple, Oppo, Huawei and Vivo. Free data of up to 114GB were also given out on-top of the Php2,000 discount.
“These Smart 5G Experiential Zones are just one of the many ways that Smart has been empowering Filipinos to experience 5G,” said Jane J. Basas, SVP and Head of Consumer Wireless Business at Smart. “Through these events, we are making Smart 5G simpler and easier for our customers across the country to access and enjoy.”
Among the first visitors of Smart’s 5G Experiential Zone in Alabang is Angel Edrosa, who admitted being excited about 5G technology. “My friends and I are excited about it–we heard it could further improve our streaming experience,” she said, adding that connectivity is a necessity, especially during the pandemic. “People could really benefit from fast speeds and connectivity at this time, especially so they can stay in touch with their loved ones.”
Christina Tolentino, another visitor, is also curious about the technology. “I’m interested about 5G because I heard that its faster speeds would also be useful to people who are working and studying from home,” she said.
5G, the latest evolution of wireless communications, offers superfast data speeds and lower latency. It is expected to make Smart, which has been cited as the country’s fastest mobile data network by third-party analytics firm Ookla, even faster.
With Smart 5G, subscribers may upload and download heavy files in seconds, stream high-resolution videos seamlessly, play online games without noticeable lag, and benefit from other cutting-edge apps and services on their smartphone.
‘Nationwidest’ 5G network
As the wireless arm of the country’s largest integrated telco PLDT, Smart remains at the forefront of the 5G revolution in the Philippines with the continued nationwide roll-out of its 5G network.
To date, Smart has tripled the number of its 5G sites across the country, firing up more than 1,400 5G sites across the country as part of its ongoing 5G rollout, by far the most extensive in the country.
These include 5G sites recently fired up in Benguet, Misamis Oriental and Zamboanga Sibugay. These are in addition to 5G sites deployed in all of Metro Manila’s cities and municipalities, as well as in the provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Pampanga, Rizal, Cebu, Iloilo, Aklan, and Davao.
These initiatives form a large part of PLDT’s sustained network investments, which totaled some Php286.3 billion from 2016 to 2020. PLDT and Smart are prepared to invest between Php 88 billion and Php 92 billion in capital expenditures in 2021.
Supporting Smart’s 5G network is PLDT’s fiber infrastructure, which is the most extensive in the country, is at more than 429,000 kilometers as of December.
