Scania, a Swedish-based manufacturer of trucks and buses, has unveiled in the Philippines its Fleet Management System (FMS), an application designed to provide connected services for both fleet operators and drivers.
Through Scania FMS, fleet owners can identify and use real-time information such as vehicle data, fuel consumption, fleet position and driver performance that are useful to enhance productivity while reducing costs. With reports generated from the system, operators can spot potential problems early; able to coach drivers into adopting more economical driving habits and improve service planning.
Developed in Sweden, the system is now locally available and can be downloaded for free but can only be installed on every Scania truck and bus for a monthly subscription fee of P1,800. To date, the system is already being used by over 100 units of Scania trucks and buses in the country.
Leilani Lim-Tan, Vice President at BJ Mercantile, Inc., the local operator of Scania, said the system is already installed in all new Scania trucks and buses that are being sold in the country.
Fleet operators need to activate the system with the use of Scania Communicator telematics unit, a pre-installed device that regularly collects, saves, sends and receives information for analysis and presentation on the Scania Fleet Management portal.
Monitoring and Control Service
Scania FMS’ Monitoring and Control Service Packages provides operators with weekly email summaries covering all their vehicles on information such as Fuel Consumption, Carbon Dioxide Emissions and driving behaviors, that show how each vehicle is performing and which ones need immediate attention.
For their service planning, fleet operators can access the Scania Fleet Management portal which provides an overview of all equipment in the fleet as well as their management plans, including a calendar that keeps track of maintenance and repairs. Through the Scania FMS, operators can get access to the defect reporting function and drivers can instantly report problems and supply photographs directly from the site of the incident. When a vehicle is scheduled for repair through the FMS portal, Scania genuine parts needed for replacement can be prepared in advance to reduce downtime.
The Control Service Package, on the other hand, is an advanced set of services that help fleet owners utilize vehicles and driver follow-ups and operational information to support their transport process. Apart from the benefits offered through the Monitoring Package, operators can also access other useful information and functions such as Driver Evaluation, Vehicle Evaluation, Fuel Report, Events Report, Vehicle Tracking, Fleet Position, Environmental Report, and a Messaging Service for quick and easy communication.
The Control Package, which gives 24-hour access to key fleet details via the Scania Fleet Management portal, allows fleet owners to be updated about their vehicle information at every 10.5 or one-minute intervals.
According to Fintan Morias, Connected Services Manager at Scania Southeast Asia, fleet operators can access the location of their fleet every 10 minutes as the system uses a roaming SIM card that comes from Sweden.
Scania is a part of Volkswagen Truck & Bus GmbH and one of the world’s leading manufacturers of trucks and buses for heavy transport applications.
