Violin Memory launches latest flash storage platform in Phl

US-based all-flash storage arrays provider Violin Memory Inc. has introduced in the Philippine market its latest flash storage platform (FSP), the first all-flash storage system designed to run all primary storage which consolidates and simplifies next generation data center workloads to deliver better performance while incurring lower capital as well as operating expenditures.

Distributed locally by Ionics Inc., Violin’s offering includes the new 7300 and 7700 all-flash arrays, with Concerto OS 7, and Symphony 3 simple management control.

“Flash storage platform is the next step to data center storage as it can eliminate the challenge in the data center which is to increase the density within the data center,” said Jeffrey Morrison, VP/GM, APAC at Violin Memory. “Violin FSP offers consistent performance for primary storage, flash at a cost lower than disks. It also provides more storage for money, high ROI, lower total cost of ownership, and easy to acquire.”

Morrison said that they buy their flash at Toshiba and assembled it as Violin Intelligent Memory Module (VIMM) that provides one terabyte (TB) for each card. VIMM provides the benefits of flash in the data center as it can avoid the shortcoming of solid state disk (SSD) design and limitations of its legacy storage architecture.

The company’s 7300 and 7700 flash storage platform has designs that decrease the effective cost per gigabyte by over 75% as against its prior generation of arrays. Compared with its competitors, the cost per gigabyte was also reduced by more than 25%. The solution can deliver all-flash storage for large deployments for as low as $1.50 effective cost per gigabyte, making it possible to upgrade all primary storage to all-flash, and opening up the estimated $15-billion primary storage market to all-flash based solutions.

This performance is attributed to Concerto OS 7, which powers the combination of Violin’s system-level flash management and control, block-level de-duplication and compression data efficiency engine, and one of the broadest sets of data management, protection and recovery services, into a single, integrated operating system.

All capabilities of Concerto OS 7 is managed by the user through Symphony 3, bringing flexibility and granular control on a per workload, application or LUN level of all features with the most elegant, and simple, single pane of glass storage management solution in the industry

The FSP has a fourth generation Flash Fabric Architecture (FFA) that sets new and unprecedented levels of performance, scale and density. Violin’s 7300 FSP has a capacity of 217TB effective in a three rack unit space, while 7700’s six-shelf configuration exceeds 1.3 petabytes (PB) effective, delivering industrial scale and density of 2.2 PB effective in a rack. The FSP achieves one million IOPS at sub-millisecond latencies delivering capacity and performance for greater workload consolidation.

Morrison said that there will be no disruptions that will occur in operations if an enterprise migrates from its legacy or non-Violin storage solutions to Violin’s all-flash storage platform.
